Mate is a traditional South American drink rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. It has been found to boost energy, improve mental focus, and enhance physical performance. The antioxidants in mate may also help protect against heart disease and cancer. Additionally, mate has been shown to support weight loss by increasing metabolism and reducing appetite. However, excessive consumption can have negative effects.
Typical mate consumption
South Americans safely drink 1–4 liters of mate per day. In the United States, Canada, and Europe, it’s not uncommon for an avid mate drinker to consume at least 1–2 liters per day. The amount you consume daily will depend on your tolerance and preference.
Caffeine content
At 85 mg of caffeine per cup, mate contains less caffeine than coffee but more than a cup of tea. Thanks to its caffeine content, mate can help increase energy levels and boost mental focus.
Is too much mate bad?
But mate is a natural plant like any other tea you drink or vegetable you eat. It’s also proven to contain a unique powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, saponins, and more. Too much of one thing is almost never good.
If you’re sensitive to caffeine, go easy on the quantities.
Possible side effects
Mate tea can be made traditionally in a gourd, French press or with teabags. Side effects can include gastrointestinal upset, anxiety and insomnia. Some studies link excessive consumption to cancers, although research isn’t conclusive.
Recommended daily intake
I recommend avoiding constant mate drinking, 2-3 beverages at most per day. Avoid evening drinking if caffeine sensitive.
For side effects sensitivity, avoid evening mate, especially in constant amounts. 2-3 drinks maximum through late afternoon is best.
How mate and coffee compare
While containing similar caffeine, mate and coffee work differently. Coffee can cause an energy crash, but mate drinkers feel stimulated and soothed from theobromine. Mate also provides mental alertness you don’t get from coffee or tea, without an unwanted crash.
