Nutrition and Health Benefits
The herbal tea contains antioxidants and polyphenols, which may protect against heart disease. Human studies show it reduces cholesterol. At 85 mg per cup, it has less caffeine than coffee but more than tea. Similar to coffee and tea, the South American beverage is commonly consumed as a morning pick-me-up. However, South Americans drink it all day.
The herbal tea has benefits similar to caffeinated drinks. Benefits are due to antioxidants and amino acids that fight cell damage from oxidative stress, a cause of aging and disease. This plant contains chlorogenic acid, found in fruits, vegetables, coffee and tea. It has fewer negative side effects than coffee or tea.
Potential Side Effects
Some compounds in the herbal tea may increase cancer risk when consumed very hot over long periods, especially alongside smoking. The cancer risk may be due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in it, which are carcinogenic.
Consuming large amounts for long periods also increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx, bladder, kidney and lung. The caffeine can cause side effects like jitteriness and sleep trouble in those sensitive to it. Pregnant and nursing women should limit caffeine intake.
To reduce side effects, start slowly with moderate amounts. Most risks come from drinking very large amounts over long periods alongside other risk factors like smoking. For most people, the health benefits outweigh the risks when consumed in moderation. Those with medical conditions or who are pregnant/nursing should be cautious with daily caffeine intake from it.
Stimulant Effects
The South American beverage provides stimulation similar to coffee. However, it has less caffeine but more nutrients than coffee or green tea. It provides an energy boost in a more balanced way.
In South America, it is very popular across all ages. It’s considered a ritual of hospitality to share it with friends and family.
Other Health Effects
Studies show it can reduce LDL cholesterol in people with high cholesterol. It also aids weight loss.
Yerba mate contains more antioxidants than any other tea-based drink. The Indigenous GuaranĂ people considered it a gift from the gods. It continues to symbolize culture and tradition in South America.
