Preparing mate

To prepare mate, you will need a gourd, a metal straw called a bombilla, loose mate leaves, and hot water between 80-100 degrees Fahrenheit. Start by filling your gourd half to two-thirds full with the leaves. Make a half-moon shape of leaves on one side of the gourd. Pour a bit of cold water over the leaves to protect their nutrients. Insert the bombilla and lay it flat atop the leaves. Pour the hot water to the top, avoiding the dry leaves on one side.

The traditional way to drink mate is continuously throughout the day, adding more leaves or hot water as needed. Use a thermos to keep your water hot for refilling your gourd.

Mate has a unique flavor with tobacco and oak hints. It provides an energy boost and other health benefits like aiding digestion. The social nature of sharing mate makes for a wonderful tradition.
