Mate does not cause cancer. No study shows it causes cancer. However, any very hot beverage may increase chances of esophagitis and throat cancer.
Cancer risks
Drinking large, daily amounts over time increases cancer risks including:
- esophagus
- kidney
- stomach
- bladder
- cervix
- prostate
- lung and possibly larynx or mouth.
Drinking very hot mate increases cancer risks more than at cooler temperatures. It contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are carcinogenic. Using unsmoked mate should reduce risks.
Always choose unsmoked, organic mate.
